Effective conversations have the potential to contribute to the development of leaders of character and have also been shown to have a positive impact on flourishing. The 'conversations for character' programme trains participants in coaching techniques, restorative approaches, and methods of promoting flourishing. The skills developed by this programme include listening, self-awareness, moving from values to virtuous dispositions, effective questioning, goal achievement, growing through challenges, perspectives, and creating flourishing relational ecosystems.
The programme is facilitated by Oxford Character Project Associates, Emmie Bidston and Katie Granville Chapman:
Emmie Bidston is an ILM Level 7 Executive Coach and Mentor and has been coaching leaders and training people to coach for 5 years. She is an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Character Project. Emmie studied Economics at the University of Cambridge before working for the UK civil service in a range of areas from education to contingency planning. She co-founded a charity to help develop young leaders in Africa and runs conferences, coaching and leadership training for adults and young people. She has co-authored a book with Katy Granville- Chapman, Leader: know, love and inspire your people, which has been longlisted for the Chartered Management Institute’s Book of 2021.
Katy Granville Chapman is an ILM Level 7 Executive Coach and Mentor and has been coaching leaders and training people to coach (from 20 countries) for 8 years. Katy is an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Character Project and a Doctoral Teaching Fellow at Oxford University’s Department of Education; she is also a research associate at the Oxford University Wellbeing Research Centre. Katy is the co-chair (with Emmie Bidston) of the ‘Leadership for Flourishing’ and ‘Educational Leadership for Flourishing’ groups – a joint initiative between the Oxford Character Project and the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University. Katy is the co-founder of Global Social Leaders, a leadership programme which has participants in 105 countries, all passionate about creating and sustaining positive change in the world and is also a deputy headteacher.
