At a time of significant uncertainty when humanity faces major economic, social, and environmental challenges around the world, the need for good leadership is more pressing than ever. The urgency of global challenges, such as those encapsulated in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the need to do more and move faster, has resulted in calls for courageous moral leadership. Now, we need a new generation of leaders who will further the flourishing of society and the planet, placing the public good above personal gain. We need to rethink the idea and practice of leadership to successfully face the complex challenges that lie before us.
As the academic year begins in Oxford, there is a question for those responsible for educating the leaders of tomorrow and for students themselves: How can a generation of diverse, talented, and aspirational Oxford students become the leaders they want to see in the world? How can they lead in a way that pursues justice, builds trust, embraces diversity, cares for the climate, and steers communities, organisations and society through our challenging times?
The Programme for Global Leadership, based at the Department of Politics and International Relations, is hosting a series of conversations with three extraordinary world leaders.
- Ms Ana Helena Chacón, Former Vice President of Costa Rica - 27 October 2023 (11:30 am - 12:30 pm, DPIR Boardroom 172) - FULLY BOOKED. If you still sign up, you will be placed on a waiting list.
- Mr Tshering Tobgay, Former Prime Minister of Bhutan - 30 October 2023 (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Seminar room B)
- Professor Juan Manuel Santos, Former President of Colombia and Nobel Peace Laureate - 31 October 2023 (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, DPIR Boardroom 172) - FULLY BOOKED. If you still sign up, you will be placed on a waiting list.
These sessions will give Oxford students an opportunity to consider character qualities that are essential for leadership, guiding their vision for themselves and shaping how they might exercise leadership, both now and into the future. We have only a few spaces available as all three conversations will be in a roundtable format.
Please sign up ONLY if you can attend and stay for the entire hour. If you have any questions, please write to email@example.com.
