At "The Role of Philosophy of Education in Teacher Training and Teaching Practice" conference, organised by Philippine Normal University and Ateneo de Manila University, OCP Research Fellow Dr Edward A. David presented a paper entitled, "Transformative Learning and Aristotelian Character Education". He discussed how “transformative” educational experiences — often promised by colleges and universities — can fall flat when inattentive to the development of moral character. Engaging with the ground-breaking work of Jack Mezirow, the founder of transformative learning theory, Dr David showed -
1) how Aristotelian character education fills in gaps left by Mezirow’s strongly, and perhaps overly, cognitive approach to personal transformation, and
2) how the Oxford Global Leadership Initiative (a programme of The Oxford Character Project) ties together transformative learning insights and Aristotelian strengths.
