Dr Edward Brooks, Executive Director of the Oxford Character Project, delivered a talk at the V Uniservitate Global Symposium, held on 7–8 November 2024 in Rome. The event, themed Service-Learning: Transforming Higher Education from Within, explored how universities can integrate character, service, and spirituality into education. Dr Brooks shared insights on embedding character education within university curricula, aligning with the symposium’s broader aim of fostering holistic education that cultivates moral and ethical leadership among students.
The conference focused on institutionalising solidarity service-learning in Catholic higher education, addressing key global challenges through education. Discussions linked service-learning with the Global Compact on Education and the Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the role of universities in shaping ethical, service-oriented leaders.
Dr Brooks’s contribution underscored the significance of character formation in higher education, demonstrating how leadership development can transform students’ values and aspirations. His insights added to a global dialogue on education’s role in building a more just and compassionate society.
